Research + Design + Strategy

The Oasis
The concept revolves around the idea of re-imagining junction as a spot where commuters can calm down and recharge for there journey ahead.
ABOUT PROJECT
This was a live project, as a part of Design Project 1 at NID in collaboration with Ahmedabad Traffic police. The project aimed at understanding the perception of traffic from a behavior perspective, studying various traffic behaviors in an Indian context and finally designing strategies to change selected behaviors.
SCOPE OF WORK
The project was done through the means of primary and secondary research. The research was tickled down to one behavioral context and its triggers, core and mental model were mapped. Design directions were provided in the area to conceptualize strategies for a new product/service leading to behavior change.
We also look at understanding traffic as a behavior problem rather than a
pure infrastructure issue and how tapping into the root cause of the same
and with the help of research tools, we could design a process towards
finding the right and the key insights.

CONTEXT
Our area of work was Pakwan Char Rasta (junction) lies on NH 8C that connects Sarkhej with Chiloda near Gandhinagar. It is a 45.5 km stretch, primarily built as a means to bypass the traffic from the City of Ahmedabad.
Pakwan Junction acts as one of the gateways to the city of Ahmedabad

Key Observations
1.
Most of the two-wheelers and pedestrians have there face covered due to the air and noise pollution on the road and junctions. Always in state of hurry
2.
Two-wheelers percolate to the front of the traffic if there is a scope of maneuvering.

3.
There is an Inability to decide whether people can make it within green signal timing.
4.
Cars honk the most, as soon as the signal turns green
5.
Car drivers don't turn off ignition at the junctions even if the wait time is more than 2 minutes
6.
Traffic police are exposed to heat, dust, emission and loud noise throughout there working hours
drives
exhibited
behavior

Fight or Flight mode
Commuters on the road are in a constant state of anxiety and want to escape the situation
Prey and Predator behavior
The size of the vehicle decides the dominance and authority on the road
Loss aversion
Perceived sense of loss of time and saving time is perceived as bigger incentive
Illusion of control
Ability to look only for short-term benefits, not on long term safety
Lack of feedback and uncertainty
Excessive and unresonable honking
KEY INSIGHT
HYPOTHESIS

Drivers while driving breathe less or do shallow breathing
Lack of O2 in the driver system while at a junction is one of the contributing factors to there anxious and aggressive mental state.

When we breathe in a shallow way, the body remains in a cyclical state of stress.

“Shallow breathing doesn’t just make stress response, it makes stress a habit our bodies, and therefore, our minds, are locked into,” says John Luckovich

A person starts the journey from a mild state and which transforms to a wild state
VALIDATION

The above insights were validated through different secondary resources and practical experience within the given limits of the available equipment. Through secondary research, it was established that there is a direct relationship between stress and anxiety. Further anxiety and oxygen level were measured through the Samsung Health app.

Stress is directly related to your breathing

Rate of breathing affects the content of oxygen in your blood and is directly related to the Stress and tension at that time

Brain and O2 ratio

Our brain is 2% of the total body mass, but the adult human brain consumes about 25% of the resting body oxygen. Mainly due to the dense synaptic connections, oxygen utilization in the cerebral cortex is three- to fivefold that of white matter

Bike riding posture

The posture of riding bike presses the lungs and diaphragm hence result in shallow breathing
